Designer and Co-founder of "Mckee Craft Boats"

established in 1966, Henry O. Mckee had not

satisfied his desire to create the ultimate in a

comfortable, dry and stable riding small craft.

Leaving "Mckee Craft Boats" in 1974, he ventured

  out on his own to pursue this vision, and

established Henry O. Mckee & Sons near Bolivia,

NC.

After several years of experimentation, he and his

sons began successfully producing the "Henry O"

in 1983. First came the 150 Challenger and later

the 179 Invader. After realizing that conventional

hull designs were not the answer, he began

creating a radically new and streamlined hull in a

17 model. This hull design proved to be the

fulfillment of Henrys vision, a stable, highly

maneuverable soft dry ride. Later versions of this

innovative design came in 22 and 16 lengths. In

spring of 1989, four models were being produced.

Constructed from rugged, high-impact ABS plastic, the Pond Prowler has internal cut-to-fit block foam for flotation and a wood-reinforced, ribbed floor for strength. The easy-to-maneuver Pond Prowlers deep rib hull ensures the boat remains balanced even in rougher water with two anglers standing and constantly shifting their weight. Incredibly easy to transport, the 10 Pond Prowler weighs only 130 lbs. and is 48 wide which is the same width of a full-size trucks bed between the wheel-wells. Pond Prowlers are pre-wired for a trolling motor and are outfitted with corrosion-resistant aluminum seat frames, padded folding swivel fishing seats, molded in trays, fishing rod holders, dry storage box and the rear metal transoms are reinforced with wood.

The operator/pilot/driver and in most instances the passengers, are seated in elevated seats that allow visibility over swamp vegetation. The improved visibility permits the operator and passengers to observe floating objects, stumps and animals in the airboats path.

The characteristic flat-bottomed design of the airboat, in conjunction with the fact that there are no operating parts below the waterline, permit the vessel to be navigated easily through shallow swamps and marshes, in canals, rivers and lakes as well as on frozen lakes. The airboats design makes it the ideal vessel for flood and ice rescue operations.

Steering the airboat is accomplished by swiveling vertical rudders positioned at the rear (stern) of the vessel. The propeller produces a column of air that produces forward momentum. That column of air passes across the rudders, which are directed through the forward and backward movement of a vertical "stick" located on the operators left side. The "stick" is attached to the rudders via teleflex cable or linked rods. Overall steering and control is a function of water current, wind, water depth and propeller thrust.

As Fighting Irish fans descend upon Chicago for the Shamrock Series off-site home football game between the Notre Dame and Miami on Oct. 6 (Saturday), the University will present four academic events highlighting various topics of interest, including the national media, the economy, U.S. foreign policy and the role of religion in politics today.

All events are free and open to the public and will be held at the JW Marriott, 151 W. Adams St., Chicago.
